This battle was a miserable experience for soldiers, especially Germans. During the winter, the Germans were freezing, starving, and dying from lack of food and necessary protection from the elements. With no way out, they were stranded in the frigid Russian winter. Only half the necessary supplies were received from the Luftwaffe deliveries.
